… I blow dried my hair haha
I think this is probably blasphemy (blasphemic? Is that a word?) within the natural hair community but; I had a spare 7million hours and had a lot of fun with my hair the other day.
I can hear the twists outs scream as I write these words!
I’m only playing, about the screaming, I am however not playing about the blow-dry. I literally went to town on this bad boy. It was very awesome, I say ‘was’ because the effects were rather short lived.
I also cut it a little bit but I will explain everything below….
I have to admit it is nice waking up in the morning and not having to worry about what shape my afro will be in, plus it is always lovely to be able to run my hands through my hair without risk of losing a finger. You know what else is pretty vibezy with this do? Not breaking any combs or hairbands! Countless accessories have fallen in my quest to tame my fro and today marks an amnesty between The Bokinni and the Hair Tools of the world… All of this is temporary though and will only last until the rains come, or I wash my hair.. Whatever happens first.
Ooh in case you were wondering; this wrap jumper is from Gap and is super cosy, which is needed since summer has eluded us this year! But I digress… You obviousssssly want to know more about the hair!
What is funny; is that in the process of taking these photos my hair started to grow and grow and grow slowly at first and then uncontrollably until I remembered why blowdrying is a hassle! Apparently I had forgotten that natural hair tends to do this, it’s like I thought I was immune to the effects of the elements. I remember when I used to have permed hair and of course once I straightened it out it was DEAD STRAIGHT for the whole day (or month, or until I decided to wash it)
I dont miss that, firstly my hair was extremely unhealthy and once you have straight relaxed hair there are little options as to what to do next but for some strange reason I thought the same thing would happen to me after blowdrying my natural hair.
Of course it didn’t and I have no idea why I was so surprised!
By the end of the afternoon I looked like an electrocuted puppy , all be it a sassy electrocuted puppy, it’s still a puppy. That has been electrocuted, I’m going to stop saying that now, all I can picture are electrocuted puppies ):
Yes this is a bit of a hair update, I feel that because I told you about my ‘journey‘ initially, it is only right that I keep you posted. (On a different note I video’d myself achieving the perfect top knot the other day and forgot to post it on my instagram.. I will be doing that soon lol)
So consider this post a combined update of how my hair is doing, what it isn’t doing and what I want it to be doing and consider this a moan at all of the people who have been moaning at me for straightening it (which is a little annoying, unless you mean well then it isn’t annoying at all) and please also consider this an excuse to use a new photo editing app I found.
I used to have half of my head shaved (remember that?) and trying to even out the sides has been the bane of my life for the last 18months, I think i may finally be getting close, woohoo! But this also means I am having to trim the right side of my hair A LOT to try and speed up the match up (if that makes sense)
So for me it is a frustrating time because even though there is growth, it won’t be noticeable for a while *cue the violins*
I am going to give you some advice now; NEVER shave your head.. Yes you will look super duper cool for however long you decide to keep it and it literally halves styling times (lol) BUT and I mean BUT, this is a big fat sweaty butt with warts on it, growing it back will be the single most depressing thing you will ever do… When you weigh up those odds it just isn’t worth it.. Unless you shaved your head yesterday, then ignore all of the above and be fly, as a bird in the winter… Heading south.
I do get a little annoyed with all of the ‘advice’ I have been receiving recently. Now, this is not to say that people who are genuinely trying to be helpful are getting on my tits, no, its the comments about how I should or shouldn’t be treating my own head that stress me out.
Yes I want to have knee length super health gorgeous hair but no I don’t want that to be the only thing I think about of my whole day. I am not someone who has the time or patience to treat my hair like it is a new born baby.
I am a firm believer in the fact that everyones hair and routines are different, and although there are a few changes I have made recently i.e.; not generally putting heat only hair until now obvs, using natural hair products (Big Hair is a brand that I have recently found and it is shamazing) and making sure I keep my hair moisturised. I also don’t think that what I do is the best thing for everyone. And I wouldn’t expect people to listen to me just because I live the fluff life, I am not Mayor of Fluff Town.
This will probably be the last time (unless the weather picks up and I have time to shoot another blog this week) you see my barnet in all of its fluffy glory for a while. I am going to be braiding it up for the rest of the summer, so why not have one last blow out? Haha!!
But seriously though; it is easy to get caught up in the trends and fashions, and going natural is definitely the new vibe everyone is on. Honestly? I think it is one of the better trends to hit in recent years as looking after your natural self is always a good thing and because I fall over wearing platform flip-flops. But the bottom line is that only YOU know YOU. And you’re the only one who knows if something works or doesn’t, if something suits you or doesn’t. So do not allow people to make you feel bad because you dont use 100% ho ho bah (jojoba) oil infused with crystallised unicorn blood on your curls to ensure the finest definition… As my best friend Temi says ‘Do you booboo’. Although I’m sure she is lying when she said she made that up.
One thing I think we can all agree on… It looks a little bit bad ass init?!
P.s. No unicorns were hurt during the writing of this blog.
Stay blessed x
